WREN urges community groups to come forward and claim funding

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Community groups are being urged to come forward and take advantage of funding made available under the Landfill Communities Fund and distributed by Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN).

WREN was founded nearly ten years ago and has been responsible for distributing almost £100 million to 4,000 needy projects across the UK.

The landfill tax credits it distributes are provided by the landfill operator Waste Recycling Group Ltd (WRG) which works with several local authorities and manages 13 million tonnes of household, commercial and industrial waste each year.

WREN is able to use a proportion of the landfill tax that WRG collects to fund projects that improve the environment within 10 miles of a landfill site.

Recipients of the organisation’s grants vary widely from small community groups looking to build a village hall, to larger organisations such as The Woodland Trust and the RSPB.

Peter Cox, Managing Director of WREN, said: “Whether you are hoping to build a new playground, restore a historic building, or plant more trees WREN could be a source of funding for your project.

“We distribute £15 million annually for the benefit of communities, and are urging people involved in community projects to come forward and apply for a grant.”

For further information on applying for funding from WREN call 01953 717165 or visit www.wren.org.uk.

We are always looking out for willing volunteers to help out at our various events, and you can do as much or as little as you wish.

Tesco Computers for School

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Tesco Computers for SchoolsIf you feel that Tesco deserves your custom, then don’t forget to collect their ‘Computers for Schools’ vouchers each time you shop. You can donate these to help benefit Hamilton. Last year the school collected 25,445 vouchers which were used to acquire scanners, robots and other items. The collecting box for these vouchers is in the entrance hall opposite the school office.

To boost the voucher total this year Hamilton is also collecting ink jet cartridges and mobile phones for recycling. A working mobile phone is worth 40 vouchers and a non-working phone 15 vouchers.

Vouchers, mobile phones and ink jet cartridges can be sent into school with your children or placed in the containers provided.

The last day that vouchers will be available in stores is 13 May, and all vouchers have to be banked by 28 September. Ordered items will be delivered to the school in the Autumn term.

I'm going BIG for Comic Relief - join in at rednoseday.com
For this year’s Red Nose Day the Headmaster has invited children to come to school dressed in red or wearing ‘outsized clothes’ with their red noses. They should also come with “the funniest joke they know”, which needs to be written on a piece of paper with their name and class.

A collection for donations to Comic Relief will be made at the gate on the day.

RBS Group employee needed to recommend Hamilton for Supergrounds Award

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

RBS Supergrounds logoSupergrounds is a £6 million community investment programme funded by RBS Group and delivered through Learning through Landscape that helps primary schools improve their school grounds.

Over six years, 900 primary schools from around the UK will have the opportunity to transform their existing school grounds into attractive and stimulating places where children can learn and play in safety.

Schools can’t apply to receive a Supergrounds Award: they need to be nominated by an RBS Group employee who is “actively involved with your school as a PTA member, governor, volunteer or supporter”.

Are you an employee of The Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest, Ulster Bank or other RBS group company involved with your school? Do please consider nominating Hamilton before the end of March. If you fit the bill you can find out more on the RBS Group intranet.
